Choosing an electricity plan in DFW (without getting burned)
Most of DFW lets you pick your electricity provider. Here's how to read a plan before you sign.

Most of North Texas is in a deregulated electricity market. Your poles and wires belong to the utility (Oncor in most of DFW), but you choose the retail provider that bills you. Some cities and co-op areas are exceptions, so check your address first.
How to compare plans
- Use PowerToChoose.org, the state's official comparison site.
- Look at the price at your real usage, not just the advertised 1,000 kWh rate. Many plans use bill credits that only apply in a narrow usage band.
- Read the Electricity Facts Label (EFL). It shows the true pricing, fees and contract length.
- Check the early termination fee and what happens when the contract ends.
Tips for new homeowners
- Ask the seller or your agent for a year of past usage so you can estimate your bills.
- Fixed-rate plans are the most predictable through Texas summers.
- Set a calendar reminder a month before your contract ends.
We don't recommend specific providers, and we aren't paid by any.
